A Year To Self Love

image

What is it that you’ve always wanted to do with your life? Maybe you’ve always dreamed of travelling around the world exploring the beautiful sights there are to fall in love with, or starting your own business, or maybe it’s finally taking your personal projects more seriously. What ever it is, we all have dreams that are harbored in our hearts and drive us in our lives.

For as long as I can remember, one of my biggest dreams has been quite simple- to love myself. It might sound silly to have this as one of my dreams, a bit selfish even, but to me truly loving yourself is one of the most important journeys you will embark on.image

To truly love yourself means to be completely confident in your own skin- flaws and all. It means trusting your intuition, your opinions, and your dreams. When you love yourself you are gentle, forgiving, and patient with yourself. One of the most important parts about loving yourself to me is that if you don’t truly know and love yourself, you will never be able to help or love others to your full potential. After spending months of silencing my dreams, ignoring the chance to get to know myself, I began to resent myself. I realized I could not give the love and positivity I wanted to offer to those closest to me, because I didn’t have it within or even for myself.

So, I’ve decided to take an entire year to get to know myself. An entire 365 days to fully immerse myself in the things I love, to travel to places I’ve never seen before, to move to my dream province, and to face who I am- even the dark, scarred parts. I am also committing myself to not dating during this time of self discovery. I won’t be naive enough to say never, (we all know how unpredictable relationships can be) but I will say that for the majority of this year-long journey, I will be staying loyal to myself.

I’m going to make this a segment to my blog so that I can leave updates on how I’m finding the inspiration to love myself, and share with you all what I find on this journey!

Good for you! I did a journey towards self love recently… In fact, I am still there, to be honest. But it’s so incredibly fulfilling and when you love yourself, you can learn to love others to a much greater extent.

  • it’s def an important thing that we don’t always have cause i feel like people are always very insecure about themselves especially females. it’s so interesting how the older you get, it seems the more confident you sorta have. but good luck on your journey x

We can be really hard on ourselves and give in to insecurity, hopefully with time and self-help, self confidence grows along with that. Thank you Fionna!

  • Eleanor Hughes

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to get the right balance in life, how can you love others if you don’t love yourself but then does loving yourself make you selfish, this is a really great idea to help you find yourself and maybe something I need to consider doing

  • Egle Rymolaityte

Good luck with this journey! I really know what you are going through. I think this was also the reason why I have started a blog and wanted to start a Youtube channel (but still don’t have the guts). Just to go out of my shell and this restricting background, routine that everyone is used to and considers normal. It is OK to be different, do different things. And I also think it is important to stay to yourself (no partner) because through life, I found myself always having a boyfriend (which of course is not a bad thing). It is just for these short periods of time that I did not have a partner I have seen myself in very different light. Somehow, you rely on the other person, you crave the support, you still act (even if you don’t feel it) to be excepted. Therefore, it sometimes is hard to see your true self. This time I am lucky to have a partner who loves me for me, I found him after that period of knowing myself. Therefore I am more myself then ever.
And as for traveling. There is this good saying that I completely agree with ‘A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions…’
    Hope the best for you!

    • Diana Maria

Thank you Egle, this was such a heart warming message to receive! You should start that youtube channel one day! I’ve always been terrified of starting one too, you’re definitely not the only one! It is okay to be different and spend time learning to accept yourself and who you are. You are very lucky to have such a wonderful partner who makes you feel more yourself than ever- that’s what a relationship should bring out in you! That’s a lovely quote and I completely agree with it, it’s definitely one I’ll save for myself. I wish you all the best as well Egle! xo

  • Beautiful post hun! I think this is a fabulous plan, something I am trying to do as well. I have backed away from so many negative people lately (to maintain sanity) and am trying to do at least a couple new things each month. Good luck to you! I hope you have a fabulous year 🙂

  • This was such a beautiful perspective on self-love, and your photographs tell the story so well. I’m happy to have found you and your blog, I’m excited to see updates of your journey. Love + Light to you!

Thank you Krystal, that’s so kind of you to say! I’m glad you enjoyed the post, it’s definitely something I think we should all think about from time to time to stay balanced. I wish you all the best as well!

  • Ohh this resonates with me *so* much. I think we all go through a period of self-discovery but it’s so inspiring to see you share yours. I’ve struggle with such internal resentment myself so this line

“After spending months of silencing my dreams, ignoring the chance to get to know myself, I began to resent myself. ” spoke to me on so many levels. It can be such a hard and arduous task to try to fully commit to loving ourselves first; there may be days in which we find it easier than others & other times it feels as if we’ve not made progress at all. I guess that’s what the journey & commitment is all about! Loved reading this. Much love to you,

    • Diana Maria

It’s comforting to know you’re not alone, and that other people feel this way too. It’s such a difficult thing to deal with feeling resentment towards yourself, but it’s also a sign that it’s time to make way for change and work on ourselves in every way we can. I wish you luck on your journey, and am so glad you could relate to this as well!

  • Vaida Tamošauskaitė

‘Self Love is vital to your happiness. If you don’t feel good about yourself, it is hard to feel good about anything’ These are my favorite words, and I see them everytime I open my laptop as I’ve put those into some desktop wallpaper that i’ve designed! 🙂 So yes, agreed on self-love and I say go for this girl! Sooner you will start feeling good about yourself, loving yourself – the better! 🙂 I’ve struggled with this for ages, and still struggle, so I do really know how much it means! Will be looking forward to see more of your self-love adventures! X

That’s such a wonderful quote and it rings so true! Thank you Vaida, it’s great to be able to hear that other people struggle with this too, and that we’re each a work in progress! I can’t wait to share them and am so glad you could relate to this as well! 🙂
