How To Stay True To Yourself

done“Because no matter what they say, you always have a choice. You just don’t always have the guts to make it.” -Ray N. Kuili.

When I first read this quote, it struck me of how such a simple statement could bare so much truth. While recently making  changes to my life to try and find myself again, I realized how tough it is to go down that road of self discovery when it means letting go of what people might think of your choices. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” ~E.E. Cummings.

Although  it might mean taking risks, jeopardizing your reputation, or losing friends who might not accept your new self, feeling comfortable in your own skin is worth all of that and more. If you feel like you’ve been putting off being who you are for long enough and want to make that change, here are a things that have helped me move forward:

Don’t worry about making mistakes– really, don’t worry, you will make mistakes no matter what you do! Mistakes go hand in hand with growth which is why they shouldn’t discourage you from trying, but should remind you you’re getting closer to the right path.

Cherish your close friends and family– surrounding yourself with loving people who care for you and accept you makes being true so much easier.

Set a large goal and work towards it– make sure you have a goal that you can work towards in how you want to be more true to yourself. The things you want to do, the goals you want to achieve- write them down to remind yourself of what you’re working for.

Take responsibility– take responsibility for your past mistakes and choices, and leave them in the past. You can’t change the past, but you can acknowledge it to become a better version of yourself.

Be kind– be kind to yourself. It’s easy to list your flaws and downfalls but constantly being your biggest critic ultimately will stop you from growing the way you need to. Be kind to yourself and understand how far you’ve come to seek self improvement!

Hopefully these actions can help get you started on letting go of your fears and being the truest version of yourself you can be. If you stay true to yourself, so much of your life will begin to fall into place and head towards a place you feel comfortable and happy being in.

What are some things you do to stay true to yourself and ignore distractions from following your path?!
