April has finally arrived, which means spring is in the air and flowers are blooming while your mind fills with exciting travel plans and beautiful destinations that are eager to be explored. It seems everyone is embarking on solo travel journeys to countries all over the world, which might make you wonder- what is so great about solo travel?
Solo travel has always been a very special style of travel for me that I hold close to my heart. It has transformed my life beyond words, and can do the same to yours if you give it the chance to! Here are 5 reasons why you should take at least one solo trip this summer, big or small:
Gaining Your Independence
If you struggle with finding your sense of independence and responsibility, this is the perfect kind of trip for you! When you travel alone, you have no one to rely on but yourself. You learn how to be responsible with your belongings, money, and most importantly yourself. Things can easily go wrong, and they most definitely will but you will learn how to take care of yourself. Once you find your balance, you will feel so great about gaining a sense of independence in your life.
Handling Your Mistakes
You will make mistakes. You’ll get lost, lose a few items, book the wrong hostel, miss your train.. the list is endless. On my trip to Europe last summer, after hours spent looking for my hostel in an isolated part of Rome, I realized the hostel didn’t exist at all. I had nowhere to stay, no phone, no one in the area could tell me where any other hostel was, and I was exhausted from the heat and the weight of my bag (I over packed, a lot). After a few minutes of throwing myself a pity party and crying on the floor in the corner of the street, I got up, went back to the subway, retraced my steps and found a hostel in the center of town. You will learn not to give up because giving up isn’t an option, and instead will learn to work through your problems and trust me when I say there is no better feeling than that!
Leaving Your Comfort Zone Behind
When you travel solo, say goodbye to your comfort zone because it is tossed out of the window and gone for good. You might have to speak a new language to strangers, ask for directions, advice, or simply meet new friends at hostels. Travelling solo is a lot more rewarding and transforming if you do things you’ve never done before. Go on a hike, take a museum tour, or go bungee jumping! Whatever it is, you will be thrown into situations you’ve never had to deal with before that will leave a stronger, more independent and confident you.
Learning To Make Yourself Happy
There will be moments where you’ll be exhausted, lonely, upset, or just down on your travels. It’s perfectly okay to have an off day or moment where you don’t feel so thrilled to be travelling. The bright side to this is that you get to explore what makes you happy and puts you in a better mood. Whether its coffee, heading out for a walk, writing, or reading a book, you’ll learn about the things that cheer you up which is something that will come in handy for the rest of your life.
I know I talk about this one a lot, but I can’t tell you enough how much solo travel has helped me find myself. Through all of the experiences, good and bad, I’ve learned important lessons about myself I may have never been open to learning, had I not taken a chance and traveled on my own to places I’ve never seen before. Facing your fears and living outside of your comfort zone all the while exploring the world teaches you lessons about yourself you never imagined you would learn.
It may sound like a huge risk to take, and it might scare you to think about taking on an entire trip on your own, but even if it’s a short trip somewhere not too far away- a solo travel trip anywhere brings with it transforming life lessons to be learned, and amazing memories to be made.
