Trust Yourself

I’m going to share a little secret with you- I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. Really. There might be a rough drafted plan somewhere in the midst of the chaos that is my life, but more often than not, life has a plan of it’s own. And you want to know what else? That’s okay, because I trust myself.

Life doesn’t come with an instruction manual. There’s no magic formula or secret answer that will get you to where you need to be. Your map is your intuition and for the most part, your intuition is more of a quiet whisper than a bold voice.

“The thing I really want to emphasize is, I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t have a choice . . . the dream is something you never knew was going to come into your life. Dreams always come from behind you, not right between your eyes. It sneaks up on you. But when you have a dream, it doesn’t often come at you screaming in your face, “This is who you are, this is what you must be for the rest of your life.”

Sometimes a dream almost whispers. And I’ve always said to my kids, the hardest thing to listen to—your instincts, your human personal intuition—always whispers; it never shouts. Very hard to hear. So you have to every day of your lives be ready to hear what whispers in your ear; it very rarely shouts.  And if you can listen to the whisper, and if it tickles your heart, and it’s something you think you want to do for the rest of your life, then that is going to be what you do for the rest of your life, and we will benefit from everything you do.” -Steven Spielberg.

Since coming across this quote, I’ve come to realize that the dream isn’t always so obvious. You don’t just get struck by inspiration and realize, this is what I’m going to do. What it comes down to is having the courage to trust yourself in the midst of the unknown.

Sit With Yourself

One of the most important things for me on this journey has been to sit with my own thoughts. There have been days where I’ve questioned myself and wondered if I was thinking straight at all. In the beginning, when you’re just scratching at the surface of your dream, you’ll be thinking about it a lot. There will be people who will tell you how silly and unrealistic you’re being.

If you haven’t yet felt the presence of what it is you want to follow, it’s easy to get discouraged by those who don’t believe in your dream. You will question yourself and your abilities. Let yourself sit with those questions, doubts, and dreams.

People Will Doubt You

Oh yeah, people will definitely doubt you. There will be those who might not want you to fail, but who don’t believe in your dream (they won’t be scared to tell you it, either). There will also be those who do want you to fail, and don’t want you to believe in your dream, either. When all else fails, trust yourself. You know yourself better than anyone else. When I listen to others and find myself unhappy with the outcome, I feel worse than if I had listened to myself and had imagined a different outcome. At least I had listened and trusted myself, rather than follow someone else’s path.

It’s your dream, you’ll be the one living with it- no one else. Don’t let others dissuade you from doing what you know is right for you. The regret of not trying at all is so much stronger than that of trying and failing. You never really fail if you try.

Your Failures Will Make You

You will try things, and not all of them will work out the way you had imagined. An obstacle, a failure, a setback- these are all lessons and whether they benefit you or bring you down is up to how you react to them. It’s all in your hands. It takes time, determination and consistent hard work to reach a goal. There have been plenty of times where I’ve thought I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, or that my work was no longer worth creating.

You will have your days of doubt, but don’t let them stop you. Keep going. Trust the journey. A failure doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough. It’s a challenge to overcome, one meant to make you stronger. If you love what you’re doing, then it absolutely is worth pursuing.

There’s No End Destination

When you have a dream, it’s not like there’s a destination to reach, and once you find your way there, you’ll be happy and it will all fall into place. It’s more like heading out on an adventure… blindfolded. There’s no outlined map showing you where you’ll end up after it’s all said and done. There are  different twists and turns on your journey, and they all lead somewhere a little bit different.

The journey never really ends, it’s always moving, always taking us somewhere new. That’s the beauty of it, we’re never standing still, only moving forward.

Deep Down, It’s There. Trust It

You’ve heard that quiet whisper before, and deep down, you know what it’s saying. I know this because I’ve experienced it myself. That voice never truly goes away, because after all of these years it’s still that same faint whisper in the back of my mind. I’ve decided to go for it. I haven’t the slightest idea where it’ll take me, so all I can do is trust it. Trust my intuitive voice, and go with it.

It’s terrifying and unknown and uncertain, but trust it anyway. Listen to your intuition and see what it says. Grab hold and don’t let it go. It might just change your life.

  • It’s so true Diana, there really is no end destination. Really enjoyed reading this post, sitting with our feelings can be quite scary and like we’re going into the unknown, but it helps so much to trust your gut feelings! xxx

  • Laura Kanevičiūtė

What a lovely post! I totally agree with that beaut quote and with you as well!! We definitely need more time to be with ourselves and understand what we REALLY need and want.
And of course, we always move foreward even when we don’t feel like doing that. There’s progress in everything ✨

  • This is such a beautifully written post Diana and I agree with all the points you have made about trusting yourself and not giving up. I’ve been going through the same thing, not knowing what I’m really doing or not having a full mapped out plan. I’ve had some really difficult weeks but I agree that we sometimes just have to listen to ourselves and know that things will get better. Lovely post xx

Thank you Kayleigh! It’s reassuring to know there are so many others who feel this way too. Wishing you all the best xx

  • Brilliant post, and I completely agree with you, Diana. It’s really hard to trust yourself, especially if you’re faced with a big choice and you’re trying to figure out what the best thing is. I always try to live by the idea that I’m doing what’s best for myself now – that way I can’t regret it. Maybe it will turn out to be a mistake, but I’ll learn something from it.

    • Diana Maria

I really admire your take on knowing that’s what you want in the present moment, regret never helps us in the end and isn’t worth it. Thanks for reading Rosie 🙂

  • I’ve been absent for three months in the blogging community and having opened Bloglovin a few minutes ago and reading this, I feel so amazed because this post is really what I needed right now. I’m facing a big choice in my life, but I’m doubting myself and my answers. This beautiful post is reminding myself that I need to trust myself more. Thank you 🙂

    • Diana Maria

Thank you Eloise, I’m glad you enjoyed the read!

  • To be honest, I’m not sure what I’m doing half of the time either. But I love the points you pointed out in this post – connecting with yourself and trusting yourself is seriously a big deal!

      Thank you Eena 🙂

  • You’re absolutely right when you say there is no end destination. I feel like I’ve just recently realised that. Before that, I kept asking myself questions about the future, about where I wanted to be – and truth is, I have no idea where I want to end up in two or three years! I just know that I’m enjoying where I am right now, and I might as well stop worrying about the rest and just appreciate where I am now. We can’t have everything planned ahead, so trusting ourselves is the key to living the life we want!

I was the same way Julia. It’s refreshing to reflect in the present moment and to simply enjoy it. Thank you for reading 🙂

  • I freaking loved this blogpost. It’s so important. I feel like you have shared such an important message. Trusting ourselves and going after what we want even if it might fail are things we should always do. I know I do my best work when I’m against a wall or terrified. x

    • Diana Maria

Thank you Serena, you’re so sweet! I’m the same way, I think fear has a lot to do with our best and most significant work.

  • Steph

This is a beautiful beautiful post and honestly so necessary for me right now. I had a set back in my dream career and had an agency tell me what I was doing, at this moment, just wasn’t good enough. So they dropped me and it was heart breaking. This was yesterday and I can honestly say this article came at just the right time for me. Thank you so much and it’s nice to know there are others in my shoes who are there to support and uplift one another 💖😭

    • Diana Maria

That must have been really tough to deal with- rejection is tough but it’s part of the process. I know you will do great things regardless Steph, wishing you all the best! xx

  • I personally think that if you believe in you, you can do everything, really.
You have to stay focus on your goal no matter what other people say. That’s the key… be strong.

    • Diana Maria

I think so too, thank you for your insightful comment 🙂

  • All of these things are so, so true! x

    • Diana Maria

      Thanks Amanda 🙂

  • I love what you said about believing in yourself even when others don’t and pursuing something anyway, even if the outcome isn’t what you expected or wanted. I would much rather try something that I want to do and fail at it, then not try something because someone else didn’t believe in me.

I try to go with that gut instinct, but you’re right: it is a whisper, and it’s not always easy to hear. I feel like I’m pretty good at believing in my abilities, but it’s definitely a life-long journey and process. This post is good motivation to get there. 🙂

    • Diana Maria

I couldn’t agree more Bria! I’m happy you could relate to the read, and I completely agree with choosing to follow something you decided for yourself. It’s always easier when you know it was something you decided. Thank you for reading!

  • Mary Jo Aguilera

Thank you for sharing this positive message! Always great to learn from what others are recently learning themselves 🙂 XO

    • Diana Maria

Thank you Mary Jo, I’m so glad you could resonate xx

  • Wow Diana. I truly enjoyed reading this post! It’s so true – the dream doesn’t come to our realization in an instant. Our dream, purpose and destiny are each revealed through time, and we have to reflect along the way and embrace failure. I love your outlook on this – you are such an inspiration! <3

    • Diana Maria

Thank you for your kind comments Ashton! You’re so kind, I’m glad you enjoyed the read 🙂

  • that’s always refreshing to hear – some days i have everything planned out, other days i don’t, and most of the time i have no idea what i’m doing with my life. failures are absolutely necessary to success – after all, if there’s no failure there’s no success, right?

Sit with yourself is amazing thing to do. In the rush of things we tend to overlook our own feelings, aspirations and what we really want to do, well done Mz

    • Diana Maria

It is, it can be difficult yet so rewarding to do xx

  • Natalie G.

This is such an inspiration post. I have to say that I agree with a lot of what you said. It’s hard to go in to the unknown to find our dreams.

  • Kim

Aw thank you for this post! It was just what I needed. I feel like we all get lost and confused with what we’re doing in life and there are many people who’ll doubt us along the way. We just have to trust ourselves and do what’s best!

I’m glad you enjoyed the read Kim! xx

  • Susie Ray

Honestly love this post so so much <3 It's true I have no idea either but focusing on that can really affect me. Failures and setbacks honestly make or break us and show us who we really are and our strength. I find spending time alone helps too. Love this so much, thank you!
